Most factories are more automated than ever. But automation alone doesn’t create a connected operation. A product changes, a BOM changes, a process changes, a quality parameter changes — and the question is how quickly that change reaches the factory floor, and whether quality data ever flows back.
The next generation of manufacturing isn’t just about automating machines. It’s about connecting the product to the factory.
The Digital Manufacturing Maturity Framework
Use these five levels to assess where your organisation stands today.
Level 1 — Manual
Manual inspection and spreadsheets. Inspection relies on sampling and the human eye, and defect data is hard to analyse. As production speeds up, manual inspection becomes harder to scale.
Level 2 — Automated
Machine Vision, PLC integration and Automated Quality Control. Cameras and scanners, machine vision and AI/ML inspect products continuously, with automatic rejection of defective parts.
Proof point: for ITC, Trident delivered AI/CV-based packet inspection using a four-camera vision system with object detection, classification and OCR, Edge AI processing, PLC integration, automatic rejection and digital storage of inspection results.
Level 3 — Connected
IoT, MES, ERP and traceability. Every part carries an identity, and every stage is recorded.
Proof point: for Rockman Industries, an automotive components manufacturer, Trident implemented QR-based part traceability using handheld scanning and a digital dashboard — unique part identity, stage-wise scanning, a centralised database, live tracking, production history and quality results.
Level 4 — Intelligent
AI, ML and predictive analytics. Every inspection creates data, and that data becomes manufacturing intelligence: defect → pattern → root cause → process improvement → better quality.
Proof points: for ACYM / Anand Group (synchronizer rings), Trident optimised an AI/CV inspection system using YOLO, PLC, MongoDB, Docker and CUDA — addressing false rejection, training data, camera repeatability and centralised inspection-data storage. For Shriram Pistons & Rings, Trident delivered AI/CV engine-valve defect inspection, moving from four to five cameras and from mono to RGB, while handling lighting, contamination, difficult geometries and machine-space constraints.
Level 5 — Digital Thread
PLM → Manufacturing → Quality → Continuous Improvement. PLM tells you what you intended to build. Quality tells you what you actually built. When the two are connected, engineering changes reach the factory quickly and quality insight flows back into design.
Trident is expanding its Digital Manufacturing capabilities to help manufacturers connect Product Lifecycle Management — including Siemens PLM — with Manufacturing Intelligence and Automated Quality.
Why the digital thread matters
Disconnected product information is costly: wrong revision → wrong production → rework → scrap → delay. A connected digital thread closes the gap between what Engineering designs and what Manufacturing builds.
Product, Process, Plant, Quality
- Product — Product Lifecycle Management
- Process — Manufacturing and process intelligence
- Plant — IoT, industrial systems and data
- Quality — AI-powered Machine Vision and Automated Visual Inspection
